Market Samurai – The Keyword Research Tool Explained – Part One
Market Samurai could be the professional keyword researcher’s keyword tool but luckily it isn’t exclusive to them. The Google
Keyword Tool can still hold its own as a creator of long-tailed keywords but for keyword analysis, keyword commerciality, and relevancy,
Market Samurai is The Daddy. This is a long article but it will cover all the various options in the first page of the Market Samurai
Keyword Research Tool leading to the analysis of the keyword list.
The software opens to the Profile window giving two choices, create
a new Profile or open an existing one. A Profile is a bit like a workbook in that this is where all your research for
each keyword is saved. One thing I like about Market Samurai is that it automatically saves your work before it closes.
If you
chose to make a new Profile, enter a keyword to work with, browse to select where to save your Profiles, choose which global area
you wish to search in, and hit create.
A new window opens advertising all the tools or modules within Market Samurai. Open the
Keyword Research Tool.
Keyword Research Tool Options
Everything we do from this point is aimed at filtering your search returns and the options available are the subject of this article. Your chosen keyword is shown at the top of the window. If you haven’t yet downloaded a free copy of the software familiarise yourself with the window by opening the image found in the link further down the page. Now you can see exactly what this article is referring to.
When the Google Search Engine searches
it automatically includes synonyms of keywords unless you direct it otherwise. For the unknowing a synonym is a word similar
to, or related to, another word, or, a two word phrase. So a search using saucepan might bring back web pages selling other
kitchen gadgets. However, whilst this is a clever piece of software, it is not perfect. For instance, it could bring back
articles on panning for gold, which of course you will have to delete.
Select to Enlarge
This is nothing more than our good old friend the Google Search Engine. Market Samurai searches here on your behalf,
re-constitutes the returns, lumps them all together with all its other findings and displays them in its own window.
This is supposed to be superfluous now as it refers to the Google Search Engine gathering words from a long since
closed database, but if you select Include sometimes it increases the word count.
This is best described using an example. Suppose your keyword is “buying wild horses”. What you will see in the search returns are those three words rearranged in every possible combination. For instance, “wild horses buying”, “horses buying wild”, “wild buying horses”. As you can see the chances of anyone actually searching with those extra terms are slim and therefore they have little or no significance to our keyword research. And remember that in the returns list these permutations will not be listed together so you will need to search through the list deleting them.
Automatic Filtering
In this part of the filtering Market Samurai does some clever mathematics behind the scenes
for you so that you get a list of words which are more suitable to your requirements. Don’t forget that the essential point
of this tool is to provide keywords that are beneficial to your marketing campaign. This is part of that procedure, and, trying
to do this manually would take hours or even days. So respect to this software I say.
This refers to the maximum potential daily visits which a web page in a number one Google Search Engine position for this keyword
could potentially achieve. Did you understand that ? I know, I had to re-read it myself, but this is the easiest way to
explain it. The important thing here is to know that any web page achieving a number one position in the Google search returns
has the potential to have 42% of all the people who choose to visit a site after searching. The web page in the number two position
receives far less than this, only 12%.
Another essential factor is that some keywords in the Market Samurai results will attract such a low number of visitors that those
keywords are not worth using. This is especially important if you use Pay Per Click advertising. What is the point in
paying money to attract visitors who have no intention of buying? For this reason users will often insert a number 20 in this
box representing “do not include any keywords in the returns which will not produce at least 20 visitors a day to my web page”.
Again, this is the total daily clicks, or traffic (visitors) which a number one ranking Google Paid Advertising web page might achieve. Remember that paid advertisers get top billing on the Google search results page but the number of visitors will not necessarily be greater than the unpaid, or organic, page results.
Nothing too complicated here. You get
to choose a minimum and a maximum number of words within each keyword.
It is common for single word and two word keywords to have so
much competition that both novices and the more experienced marketer in online marketing to have to ignore them.
Generating Your List
Now that you have set all your options in this window it is time to hit the Generate Keywords button. You will be asked to type in a Captcha word and after a few seconds the search will return a list of probable long-tailed keywords.
Honing Your List
Many words and variations that appear in this list will be of no use to you in that they will not attract visitors
or customers to your business so these have to be removed. Market Samurai provides a number of options for doing this.
On the left of the window now displayed are some boxes headed Positive and Negative. Where you have chosen some words to be essential to each keyword phrase these words will be added to the Positive box, whilst in the Negative box will be a list of all those words you selected as being of no interest to you. If you click the Clear button, all the removed words will be returned to the list.
If in some previous keyword research
you found words which you wish to include in this Profile you can add them in the Add Keywords box.
Now we are ready for some
serious analysis of our words where more words will be removed, the competition for each keyword will be displayed, and a host of
new filtering options are at our disposal. Please hit the Analyse Keywords button and wait for the next article in this series.
Conclusion
This article introduced the reader to the full range of options found in the first window of the Market Samurai Keyword
Research Tool. Where the reader did not have a copy of the software an image of the window was available via a link and each
option was described in detail. The article explained to the reader the meaning of the Google Synonym Tool, how the Market Samurai
Tool obtained its results and re-formulated the information to display it, the meaning of Ignore and Include Additional, Adding Permutations
of individual words of a long-tailed keyword, and introduced the Automatic Filtering of this tool in the SEO Traffic and Adwords Traffic
options. The reader was also advised why keywords had to be removed from the list and the various ways of doing this. Information was also supplied regarding the advantages of achieving a number one Google search return status. The article concluded
with an invitation to read the next article in this series discussing the analysis of the keywords.
